Everything that we put on our bodies gets absorbed into the skin. For this reason, I have been really interested in finding natural products to use in my daily skin routine for a while now. One of the products I happened upon is Schmidt's line of natural deodorant. Today I'm sharing my review of the Bergamot and Lime Natural Deodorant from Schmidt's Naturals.

About Schmidt’s

I stumbled upon the Schmidt's Naturals brand while browsing through the aisles at Winners (a Canadian Target pretty much). I was looking for something new and I found this gem on the shelf. They are a natural brand that caters to both men and women, with their line of deodorants,  toothpaste, and bath soaps. Their products feature minimal natural ingredients and fragranced with essential oils. Their lines feature essential oil combinations such as Lavender and Sage, Bergamot and Lime, Rose and Vanilla, Activated Charcoal, Unscented and more on their website, so there's something for everybody.

In addition, the brand is also environmentally conscious and they have a Recycling Club program on their website where you can send them 5 empty glass jars (free of charge) and get rewarded with one free deodorant of your choice. The company sanitizes the empty glass and refurbishes it. In regards to the plastic containers, while they are BPA free, at this time they are not part of the Recycling Club program.

About Natural Deodorant

Regular antiperspirants are designed to seep into the skin and plug the sweat glands. They are designed to cover the "vents" so-to-speak in your pits and prevent you from sweating. While this is seemingly all good and dandy, this mechanism often causes more harm than good. We sweat for a reason, these toxins need to get out of our bodies. Natural deodorants allow you to sweat as normal, and get all your toxins out. It simply masks the smell with a natural scent.

The Product

The Schmidt's Naturals Bergamot and Lime Deodorant retails for $11.73 CAD in jar form and $15.64 CAD in a stick on their website. I found it both on Amazon and iHerb at a fraction of the price!

Let me just say that I love the packaging. It's simple, it's reusable, just how I like it.  There are two versions of the product. You can choose their Signature Jar Formula, packed in a glass jar with a spatula, this is my favourite type because the glass jar is reusable rather than having plastic to get rid of. Use the spatula to dispense the product, all you'll need is the size of a Smartie, warm it up between your fingers are rub under both arms. If you are are the run, traveling or taking it to the gym, you might want to consider their Signature Stick Formula, just like any traditional antiperspirant.

What’s In It?

The  Schmidt's Deodorant comes in  Here is a complete list of the ingredients in this natural deodorant:

  • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)

  • Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)

  • Maranta arundinacea (Arrowroot) Powder

  • Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter

  • Citrus Bergamia (Bergamot) Essential Oil

  • Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Essential Oil

  • Tocopherol (vitamin E).

That's right. The Schmidt's Deodorant has 7 ingredients and you can pronounce every single one. You could probably make this yourself if you wanted to use the ingredients listed. That is probably what I love most about this. I typically make my own skincare products because I know what's in them, and with Schmidt's deodorants, it's exactly the same concept.

The baking soda combats body odor, mixed with butters to soften the skin and the essential oils have healing and disinfectant properties while giving the product a natural scent. My favourite, being the Bergamot and Lime because I enjoy the light citrus scent.

How Does It Wear?

When I say a little goes a long way, I mean you really don't need to use a lot of this on your armpits. The product melts easily onto the warmth of your fingers, spreads with ease under your pits, it goes on clear and doesn't leave any white marks on your clothes.

I did, however, notice that the first few days using it, my underarms burned a bit, from the baking soda I presume, as my sensitive "pit" skin was not used to such a powerful ingredient. With continued use, I have noticed my underarms lighten most likely because of the essential oils and the baking soda, and it no longer itches at all.

Now I know what you're thinking, its probably hell working out. But no. The first few weeks, I'll admit there was a little bit of funk under my arms. But after using the natural deodorant for a while, I've noticed my sweat does not smell as bad. Some days I can even go without using it, and I just apply a natural fragrant oil under my armpits and I am good to go. I guess over the years of applying all these nasty chemicals under my arms has accumulated in my skin. For the first few weeks, that was all coming out. Once that was gone, I'm left with my natural scent.

If you can get past the slight musk you will experience for the first few days, and the slight itch from not being accustomed, you will not regret switching to natural deodorant. And if you're in the market for a natural deodorant, I suggest giving Schmidt's Natural's Bergamot and Lime Deodorant a try.
