REVIEW: Coola Makeup Setting Spray SPF 30
This is the Makeup Setting Spray with SPF 30 from Coola. It retails on the Sephora website for $49.00 CAD for the 50 ml bottle. I got my hands on this early in my FabFitFun monthly subscription box, and it seems since then they’ve had a repackaging of the product. You’ll most likely find the product as the one below.

Claims
This product is marketed as a makeup setting spray made with “70% certified organic ingredients.” It is best suited for normal, combination and oily skin types to help reduce shine, provide easy over makeup SPF reapplication, and to keep your makeup in place, “fresh all day” (pretty big claim). It combats oiliness, fine lines and wrinkles, and of course sun protection.
My Experience
The instructions for this spray are a bit confusing. The instructions online advise to spray on top of makeup, evenly on the face, eyes closed, approximately 10 inches away from the face. Sounds simple enough. But on the actual bottle, it advises to spray into your hands and pat on to the face. So… this kind of defeats the purpose of the spray bottle. I suppose this is due to the debate that the ingredients in chemical SPF should not be inhaled, so the company is trying to cover their bases legally. Personally, I hold my breath as I spray this setting spray a safe distance away from my face. And then move away from the area before taking in another breath just to ensure I am not breathing it in.
The finish is fairly matte which is nice. I have combination-oily skin type that reveals its true oily power in the summertime. Great for anti-aging but not so much for keeping my makeup on. My skin does eventually get oily but it lasts for much longer. I can go about 4 hours without seeing any shininess. I use this more as a touch up throughout the day and opt for my regular SPF and makeup setting spray in the morning. Since you’re supposed to re-apply SPF every two hours, 4 hours without oil is more than enough. However, I do notice tiny white dots on the skin where the SPF falls which is a bit annoying but I’ll take tiny stops of white spots and an entire face that has a violet UV glow any day.
Where a spray is concerned, I don’t know how much sun protection it truly gives since it is very light. Cream forms of SPF will give you the best coverage so if you’re thinking about making this your go-to-everyday SPF you might want to reconsider. If you’re someone who wears little to no makeup, I think its fine to use this as well. I’ve used this on days when I don’t wear a drop of makeup and am just fine. Also, I would advise saving this for a day at work, or a day at the mall, anything where you’re not physically exerting yourself as I wouldn’t expect it to hold up with sweat involved. Put it down if you’re going on a hike, or swimming since the Octisalate in the spray is harmful to the ocean’s inhabitants and have been known to bleach coral reefs.
Overall
I have been looking for a good SPF to re-apply over my foundation for some time and I honestly can say that I do enjoy this one. Honestly, I truly prefer this older bottle with its brushed glass appearance but its what is in the bottle that counts! I’ve used this for about 4 months now, all summer long and I truly enjoy it. I wouldn’t recommend it for dry skin types but if you’re oily like me or have normal skin you might want to try this.
