Why Dry Shampoo Is BAD For Your Hair

Why Dry Shampoo Is BAD For Your Hair

We all love a good hair doo. I don’t know about you, but getting my hair done puts a certain bounce in my step. And let me get this straight, it's not cheap either, so you want to make your style last as long as possible. So what do you do? Like most people you grab that trusty Dry Shampoo bottle to go an extra 3 days without washing. It feels soft to the touch, it's shiny and smells great right? But can this quick fix be doing more harm than good?

I use dry shampoo a lot to freshen up my protective styles. After doing a little bit of research on the effects dry shampoo has on your hair, my use of it has somewhat changed but I got a better understanding of what it is, and the right way to use it. Here's why Dry Shampoo might be doing more harm than good to your hair.

Lets get one thing straight, dry shampoo is not shampoo. Simply put, its an oil absorbing powder. When we wash our hair, we are massaging the scalp removing product build up, dead skin cells, germs and bacteria from the hair. Using dry shampoo too much causes product build up and overtime dulls the hair. More than that, the oil absorbing powder irritates the scalp which can leads to hair loss because it weakens the hair follicles and can increase shedding.

On the flip side, washing your hair too much can also be harmful because it can be drying to strands and scalp. So where's the happy medium. Switch to a milder shampoo without harsh sulphates so you're not drying out hair strands, maybe try a rinse or co-wash between washes to simply rinse the oil and dirt while moisturizing the hair. Lastly, when using dry shampoo,  use it sparingly. For those with oily scalps, you should be washing your hair more frequently. One wash every 5-10 days is the happy medium. You can play around with the length of time between washes based on how your hair feels.

Tip: Work your hair styles around your washes. Wear your twist out proud on the first and second days, try a braid or bun out the third and fourth days to get some loose waves and a sleeked back low pony or high puff for that fifth day hair.

Bottom line is, our skin and hair is an extension of our health. When your face is oily, you might blot and powder a few times, but after the day is done you wash it off. Dry shampoo can make your doo last an extra day or two but nothing makes up for a good wash.  Tip, try a clarifying shampoo or rinse at least once a month to remove product buildup.
