REVIEW: LUSH Roots & R&B

lush r&b and roots

Roots

This scalp stimulating Hair Treatment, Roots retails on the LUSH Cosmetics website for $32.95 CAD as a part of their Hair Treatment line. It comes with 440 g of product (also comes in a 225 g version for $22.95 CAD).

Firstly this product smells amazing. It has a beautiful minty citrus scent from its Peppermint and Sweet Orange Oil mixture and is enriched with Honey and Extra Virgin Olive oil. It will leave your scalp tingling with freshness. The directions say to apply to dry hair, so I usually use this at the beginning of my wash day.

I section my hair using a rat tail comb and massage into my scalp to increase blood circulation. I apply a disposable shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes. Then, I wash out with my regular shampoo and conditioner routine.

In my young adult years, I have developed hyperactive oil glands in the front and crown of my head. Before washing my hair I always take a comb and scratch my scalp to loosen the build up. I wash my hair twice a week, once with shampoo then co-wash on day 4. I was looking for something to thoroughly cleanse my scalp and also help stimulate some hair growth as I am working on my hair journey. Using this for 6 months (and a second jar later) I have noticed the health of my scalp improve. When I use this treatment consistently, my scalp is not itchy, I don’t experience much build up either come wash day.

Personally, I don’t feel like this made my hair grow any faster but it did really help to heal my scalp. As promised my hair was super soft just after washing it out and my hair has become very shiny. The way I see it, your scalp is just like any other part of your body so its necessary to use a mask if you want to improve the quality of the skin. I totally recommend using this if you want to sooth an itchy scalp.

R&B

This Hair Moisturizer, R&B from LUSH Cosmetics retails on their website for $47.95 CAD for 225g of product. (It comes in a larger tub 460g for $69.95 CAD, and a smaller tub 100g for $25.95 CAD). This moisturizer is designed to smooth out your hair, reducing frizz and flyaways. It is a beautiful blend of some of my favourite hair butters and oils, including “organic avocado butter, oatmeal, olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil and candelilla wax.” It is essentially a soothing balancing cream with an orange and jasmine scent.

As with a lot of LUSH products a little really goes a long way. My 4B-C hair loves a thick butter and this does not disappoint. I love using it when I am blowdrying my hair, as it makes my hair super soft afterwards. Once again, be sure to be mindful of how much you are using as it can quickly leave your hair oily to the touch (but not greasy as though there is a film covering your hair).

Taking freshly washed and deep conditioned hair, I begin with my favourite leave in conditioner, then heat protector. I use the tension method to stretch the hair, then take a little bit of the butter between my fingers and smooth down the length of my hair. I finish by taking a brush and blowing the butters into the hair shaft closing my cuticles. My hair is super shiny and soft afterwards.

When I am doing a wash n go, I do the same steps (minus the heat tamer), apply a small amount of butter then my styling gel. It is often hard to find butters that mix well with hair gel but I don’t get any flakes.

After 4 days my hair starts to feel a bit dry so I do my hair refreshing routine, and co-wash with my favourite daily conditioner. On that note, if my hair does feel dry during the week between washes, I lightly mist my hair and add a bit of the butter to my ends. By the end of the week, I don’t feel as though I have this massive product build up even though I have re-moisturized my hair with this thick butter.

I do want to add that I typically use this predominately during our Canadian Winter’s as this is amazing at protecting my hair from the harsh cold. If I use this when it is super humid and hot outside, I find the oil is just too much so I opt for a humectant product instead.

Overall

I have nothing but good things to say about these products. I buy the R&B more often than the Roots mainly because I go through it more but I still love them both. I rave about it to everyone. If you’re looking for something that will help maintain the health of your hair and scalp give these two a try.
